Ultra Modern Wall Unit
For this piece, I hunted down a flitch of veneer (a pile of sliced veneer that comes from one log) that was quite dark with great grain character and nice and wide. I then laid it up on sheets in my vacuum press so that it was book matched where ever possible. On the back panel there are just 3 pieces, visually separated by the 2 white shelves. Note that these shelves have a triangular profile to accentuate them being cantilevered.
The overhead door swings up with the aid of pistons and the bottom cabinet swings down with pistons and stays to put it in a sturdy resting position.
All doors are carefully fitted and have soft close mechanisms.
On the bottom of the big walnut slab shelf are 3 spaced recessed LED lites that operate on a touch sensitive control.
The entire top section is hanging on the wall. To do this, an oak cleat with a 45 degree angle on top was first bolted to the wall, and then the pieces with mating cleats on their back sides slid into position. Works wonderfully and provides complete assurance that it's never going anywhere.
The high gloss white panels were a beautiful contrast to the matt lacquer finish on the walnut.
Delivered and carefully installed in downtown Toronto April 2016.
