Above are shots of a butcher block construction style coffee table I delivered to Noodle Gallery at the Alton Mills. The wood is Douglas Fir that came from a tannery at Spadina and Adelaide in Toronto circa early 1800's I believe. I was lucky to get some off-cuts when a Mennonite construction company was using the wood to build a post and beam building and my friend Raymond eyed the chunks and collected them for me. Since they had been drying for hundreds of years, I was able to immediately start squaring them up and gluing up the beast. The whole idea is paying homage to the factory lumber carts of yesteryear with some modern sexy industrial red wheels. It looks great in the gallery with it's authentic stone walls. I can see this piece sitting on a concrete floor in a modern condo, or... ?...
