These unique end-grain cutting boards were created using hardwood that had accumulated over the past few years as the remnants of larger projects.
Hard maple, black cherry, black walnut, spalted maple, purpleheart and last but definitely not least... bloodwood are all used in each board. All very dense woods with closed grain structures, making them perfect for a cutting surface.
If you've ever experienced the joy of chopping on this breed of board, you'll know how satisfying it can be. End-grain has a more solid sound, but more importantly, because the fibers of the wood are on end, the chop mark actually heals to a certain degree when the knife comes off and as a result, your knives stay sharper longer. A typical standard side-grain board is damaged with every cut and begins to show wear much much sooner.
The extra time it takes to make an end-grain board, as opposed to a simple one-step-glue-up board, is totally worth it! Instead of machining a groove in the ends for a finger hold, these boards come with rubber feet (with stainless steel screws) so that your fingers can easily pick it up.The feet also offer greater stability with zero sliding or vibrating while in use.
These end grain boards are sanded finely, submerged in food safe mineral oil, allowed to dry, then rubbed with a paste mixture of the same oil and pure bees wax, then buffed to a smooth satin finish.
They are easy to maintain and clean with warm water with a light detergent and a cloth or brush.
Not to be used in the dishwasher. They can be revitalized with mineral oil if the surface starts to appear dried out.
They feel and smell great. If well maintained, they are a life long investment.

If you receive your cutting board and notice a spot on it like this where the wood seems to be sweating, not to worry. It's a sign that the wood is super-saturated with the mineral oil. I force as much oil into these boards as possible to make them repel liquids. A quick wipe will take care of it. And don't worry about this oil getting on your food, it's totally food safe.
